The loss ration index is the relation, expressed as a percentage, between the assistance expense and the operators consideration income. A low index helps to maintain the health insur-

ance operators financial stability, something also advantageous for the consumer, as the assistance costs reduction is reflected positively on monthly installment prices. According to the

National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), in 2014 the average loss ratio registered in the industry was 84.9%. Among the different modalities of operation in the market, the “medical

cooperatives” modality registered a loss ratio of 83.8%. A more focused glance at the Unimed System evidences that in the last six years the assistance expenses have been keeping an el-

evation trend, and currently reach the level of 67% of the Unimeds total expenses. In 2014 they were 19% higher than in 2013, resulting in the amount of R$ 27 billion, approximately. The
